TAP still among the world’s safest airlines

While TAP Air Portugal slipped three places in the list of the world’s safest airlines last year, it is still in the top ten, according to a closely-watched industry ranking on the subject.

In last year’s JACDEC ranking, TAP was overtaken by Emirates and Etihad Airways – both based in the United Arab Emirates – and by Eva Air of Taiwan, making it the world’s seventh safest airline.

The only other European carrier in the top ten was British Airways, at number 10.

TAP remains among the few airlines that has suffered no accidents in more than three decades.
According to JACDEC, the Portuguese airline slipped three places because the average age of its fleet is older than that of the others.

Its last serious accident was in 1977, when a Boeing 727-200 slid into the sea after landing in heavy rain and strong winds at Funchal airport, on a runway that has since been extended. The death toll was 131.
The JACDEC report notes that 2012 was the year with fewest plane accidents since it first published the ranking, in 1983.

The confirmation of TAP’s status as one of the world’s safest airlines comes just days after Portugal’s government decided to pull the planned privatisation of the company, after the sole bidder failed to convince with its investment pledges.
